It does not take much for a fire to break out in a building, putting people's life and health in danger. Many devastating fires in multi-storey or underground car parks are sad examples. To prevent such incidents, the Bavarian city of Regensburg's public utility company decided three years ago to modernise the municipal theatre car park and install state-of-the-art fire protection equipment; €5.6 million have been invested into the project. After a year of construction, the car park re-opened in 2015.

The car park with 355 parking bays on three levels has been totally revamped to meet the latest safety and comfort requirements. One goal was to make users feel comfortable in the now brightly lit car park, but achieving the safety objectives in the event of a fire and the ventilation strategy were no less important.

The core requirement for both specialist consultants and subcontractors was rapid smoke extract in the event of a fire. An extract volume flow rate of 112,000 m3/h was required. The revamp was to comply with the Bavarian Car Park Ordinance, and the VDI 2053 and DIN 18 232 T6 standards. Close cooperation of the municipality's public utility company, fire services, consultancy firm and system provider TROX ensured that all requirements could be met.

Regarding the huge volume flow rate required, the specialist consultant decided to have TROX-TLT fans installed. Four special BVAXN smoke exhaust fans, three AXN supply air fans and two Jet fans for fresh air have been installed. Mechanical fresh air supply was a must given the existing architecture. The two Jet fans are located at the access and exit ramps of the car park. Ventilation is ensured by 18 EK-EU smoke control dampers and FKS-EE fire dampers from TROX. Fans and dampers are controlled by TROXNETCOM AS-i, while MSA sound attenuators keep noise to a minimum. The status of all parts of the system can be monitored on a special fire alarm panel, which doubles as a control panel.

The ultimate decision of the specialist consultant for an overall system from TROX was based on the consultants previous successful cooperation with the air management specialists from TROX. Another factor was the prospect of getting all components from a single source since it helped to avoid implementation issues and other problems.
